|The rainfall deficit in 2022, 174 mm compared to the average of the last 32 years, which is 445 mm, is combined with an exceptionally hot summer and an extremely dry spring that is affecting the reservoirs, some in critical condition. Municipalities and irrigators in Catalonia and Andalusia appear in the press suffering restrictions: Canal de Urgell of 90%, Canals of the Ebro delta of 50% or the Guadalquivir Basin of 80%, and Aemet has its hopes pinned on next autumn to reverse the situation, although there is not much confidence.
Agriculture is responsible for the consumption of between 60-80%, according to different funds, of national fresh water and we are aware of this responsibility towards Spanish civil society. For this reason, the Irrigation Communities and their related associations work in all aspects of water use for its rational use and even more so in the current drought situation.
Farmers and ranchers use water not to retain it on our farms or keep it under our arms, but to turn it into food for the rest of the population. The concept of exported virtual water would have to be explained. In the definition of exported water, the Special Data water physically contained in agricultural products grown and transported outside a geographic border is accounted for , and evapotranspiration induced by crop irrigation is additionally included. As a consequence of climatic conditions, evapotranspirated water is lost and is not available in the local hydrological cycle .
In a study to estimate the virtual water exported, data from the 50 most exported agricultural products from a climate similar to the Mediterranean (period 2000-2012) are used. The results show that, on average, the water exported in agricultural products corresponds to 68.3% of the water used in crop irrigation. Most of the water exported (67.7%) is represented by evapotranspiration induced by crop irrigation. The water physically contained in exported agricultural products represents less than 1% of the total annual water used for irrigation . In short, the farmer is dedicated to earning a living by feeding others through work, climate, land and water.
Farmers and ranchers do not retain water, but rather use it to turn it into food for the rest of the population.
The Irrigation Communities of FECOREVA participate, it could not be otherwise, in the preparation of the national Hydrological Plans and the different water basins that pass through the Valencian Community, they are part of the Discharge Commissions of the CHJ and have also participated this year in the preparation of the different drought plans for our rivers.
The Irrigation Communities have had two modernizations and I would say that we are starting a third. The first modernization was the implementation of drip irrigation compared to traditional blanket or flood irrigation , where significant reductions in the volumes of water consumed were achieved due to better use of the plant and the elimination of all losses in transportation ( ditches, canals, etc.) and evaporation by the sun on the water surface. The second modernization is energy , with the implementation in our communities of cleaner and more durable energies over time and at the same time that are cheaper for our farmers. We are currently immersed in the implementation of digitalization that represents the third modernization to control and quantify the real volumes of water used and work on all the new technologies (satellites, probes, meters, etc.) that allow us a more rational use. of water and better efficiency.
